    I am not sure what the subject is, as I have not studying German, but if you just said, “The bread eats the child” instead of “The child eats the bread” that is hilarious!

    The sentence could technically be read either way because “das” is both the neuter nom. and acc. article, so all you have to go on here is context, implying that the poor loaf of bread is eaten by the child.
