Aumeister und Oktoberfest
September 26, 2012
We went to the Aumeister, a rather famous beer garden which also happens to be in our neighborhood, a couple of nights ago. When you have no idea what to order, why not go with a pig leg, right?
Germans gather in beer gardens to hang out, socialize, and of course to drink. The house in the background there was the old hunting lodge for the prince of Munich. I find it funny that people often end their strenuous runs and bike rides in beer gardens with a nice liter of beer. I thought you were supposed to drink Gatorade after you work out.
Yesterday morning at the U-Bahn, on my way to take my orals.
Momma and Melody found a playground and waited for me while I took my oral exam.
Then we figured that a good way to celebrate would be to go to Oktoberfest.
Here we are at Oktoberfest. Hannah Joy was able to find her Dirndl at the fleamarket for 15 Euro.
These horses are pulling barrels of Löwenbräu, one of the five beers produced here in Munich. These are the only beers that are allowed to be served at Oktoberfest–all local beers.
We then had lunch inside the Löwenbräu tent. Things were already getting rowdy by 11:30 in the morning.
Melody claps along to the traditional oompah music inside the tent. Our waiter was shocked that I spoke German with him, “You are an American, yet you can speak German!?”
This is where we are attending church, Freie Evangelische Gemeinde. It is a stones throw away from Oktoberfest. Thus, the members are being trained to share their faith, and then teams are going out and witnessing at Oktoberfest. Wonderful idea! After all, people have come from all over the world for this fest.
On our way home riding the subway. Melody is tuckered out from the morning festivities. I must say that Oktoberfest was a disappointment. It is basically just one huge county fair with the same old rides, plus tons of beer. That must be why the locals do not go to it.
Here we have just gotten off the subway and will hop on our bikes and ride back to the apartment. You can see that bicycle is the popular mode of transportation here. We got our bikes from the fleamarket. They were very cheap, but I have already had to change 2 flat tires, and work on the brakes.
